Holter blood pressure monitoring

Holter or Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM), is a non-invasive test that records arterial pressure continuously for 24 hours.

Holter Blood Pressure Monitoring provides additional information about how changes in blood pressure may correlate with daily activities and sleep patterns.
Some clinical indications for this test are:

  • exclusion of white coat hypertension
  • identification of nocturnal hypertension
  • deciding diagnosis in borderline hypertension
  • hypertensive patients resistant to treatment
  • diagnosis of hypotension

Holter Blood Pressure Monitoring has no contraindications and no risks.

The execution of this test does not include preparation rules.

Please wear loose clothing, preferably a short sleeved top.

The portable monitor is worn on a belt connected to a standard cuff on the upper arm and uses an oscillometric technique to detect systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure as well as heart rate.

We will show you how to keep a diary of your activities and symptoms during the test. It’s important to keep an accurate diary as it can help to understand how changes in blood pressure relate to periods of activity or rest.

  • Be careful not to hit the device.
  • Avoid going to the gym/exercising while the monitor is attached
  • Avoid showering or bathing during the period of measurement
